Rediscover Sourdough

September 17, 2025

Maricela Gonzalez didn’t set out to become a baker. What began as a simple home hobby quickly grew into something more meaningful — a way to connect with her community, express her creativity, and rediscover the art of slow living. Today, she’s the founder and heart behind Dulze Vida Bakery, a small, home-based sourdough and sweets bakery known for its warmth, artistry, and old-world charm.

Sourdough, in particular, has become central to her mission. With just flour, water, and salt, Gonzalez creates breads that are nourishing, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. “Sourdough has had a big revival in recent years because people are craving food that feels authentic,” she explains. “The long fermentation process doesn’t just develop flavor — it makes the bread easier to digest.”

Even celebrities are embracing the trend. “Yes, I heard Taylor Swift recently shared that she’s gotten into sourdough baking,” Gonzalez adds. “It just goes to show how universal it is. Whether you’re a global superstar or someone baking in your home kitchen, bread has this beautiful way of bringing people together.”

For those who are just starting out, Maricela also teaches sourdough classes — something she feels is essential for helping new bakers find their confidence. “It’s such a rewarding process, but it can also feel intimidating. A class gives you hands-on experience, a chance to ask questions, and most importantly, a sense of community — which is really at the heart of sourdough.” Gonzalez is offering two- four hours sessions of “Discover the Magic of Sourdough” at the District’s Community Center on Saturday, September 27 at 9am and Saturday, November 8 at 9am.

Through her work, Gonzalez continues to cultivate not just dough, but connection — weaving together flavor, tradition, and the joy of making something from scratch.
