New Lightning Detection System Installed

June 18, 2025

Planning a round of golf, a park playdate, or attending a Sounds of Summer concert? Now, you can enjoy your favorite outdoor activities without questioning the weather as the Palatine Park District has installed a new lightning detection system.

The District recently upgraded to the Perry Weather Outdoor Warning System, a cloud-based technology that helps keep the community safe during unpredictable summer weather. Using the National Lightning Detection Network, Perry Weather delivers real-time storm monitoring quickly and accurately.

What makes it different? It’s more accurate, more accessible, and more user-friendly than ever before.

“An app allows users to monitor weather conditions on their cellphone, and we can request custom forecasts for special events from a Perry Weather meteorologist,” said Palatine Park District Executive Director Ben Rea.

When lightning is detected in the area, Perry Weather automatically sends mobile alerts to staff and activates outdoor sirens and warning systems across parks and facilities. The goal is to give everyone time to seek shelter quickly and safely.

The District has also extended access to the new system to local affiliate groups and the Village of Palatine, so even more people can stay informed.

If the grey skies have you worried at the park, just scan the QR code on the signs posted at all parks to get live updates. You can also learn more at: palatineparks.org/lightning-detection

With the new Perry Weather System, the Palatine Park District is making outdoor fun safer for everyone—rain or shine!
