Being Active is My Lifestyle

January 14, 2025

Jerry Williams credits his lifelong involvement with sports to his current active lifestyle. “I have been involved in organized sports since third grade,” he said.  “I was a three sports athlete in high school. I played football for four years in college. After college, I became an avid runner, basketball, and racquetball player. I love sports and being active. Being active is my lifestyle!

These days you’ll find Williams, who has been retired for over 20 years, at Community Fitness Center. “I visit the Fitness Center six mornings per week,” he said. “I usually begin with a stretching routine that focuses on the lower body,” he added. “Then it’s core and push-ups.  Afterward, I move to a treadmill and walk four to six miles. Every other day I complete strength training with weights. Under normal circumstances, I complete my workouts at the Fitness Center by 10:00am. At this point, my other priorities and general activities begin. If possible, I do not schedule anything until after 10:00am.”

“Jerry is an inspiration,” said Todd Ranum, Palatine Park District’s Athletic Coordinator. Ranum first met Williams when he worked as a basketball official for Palatine. “I think it’s awesome that he has taken the initiative to be so active in his retirement.”

“I became an official for football and basketball for the State of Illinois as another way to be active,” Williams said. “I officiated at all levels except varsity. During the 2000’s I officiated youth basketball at Palatine Park District.

However, Williams’ connection with the District began before that. “I first became associated with Palatine Park District in the early 1980’s when my three children became active in music, swimming, football, baseball and karate,” he said. “I coached my sons in football (PAFA) and baseball through the 8th grade. Williams’ kids and grandchildren share his enjoyment of sports and fitness. “Fortunately, my kids and grandkids are of the same mindset,” he said.

Williams chooses to work out at Community’s Fitness Center based on the cost, convenience, location, cleanliness and hours of operation. He even has tips for getting into a fitness routine and following it.

1.        Plan Ahead – Plan workouts into your schedule in advance.

2.       Set realistic goals.

3.       If possible, find an exercise buddy.

4.       Track progress.

Sound advice from Williams who you’ll find most mornings at Community Fitness Center, inspiring those around him.
